Social control theory suggests that the strength and durability of an individual’s bonds or commitments to conventional society inhibit social deviance (Hirschi 1969; Simpson 1976). The need for belonging and attachment to others is fundamental, influencing many behavioral, emotional, and cognitive processes.
A large body of criminological research inspired by social control theory has focused on how variations in the strength of individuals’ bonds to family, community, school, and other conventional groups and institutions relate to patterns of self-reported and officially recorded deviant behavior. Control theory goes on to argue that people differ in their level of control or in the restraints they face to crime. These differences explain differences in crime: some people are freer to engage in crime than others. Control theories describe the major types of social control or the major restraints to crime.
